Firefighter wins award for campaign
A FIREFIGHTER at Edinburgh Airport has won a top award after successfully campaigning for a change in the law to protect children from burns and scalds.
Mark Stevenson, who has worked for the airport's fire service for ten years, also helped set up the Scottish Burned Children's Club, which supports youngsters and their families.
He won the Shining Star award at the airport operator BAA's "I-volunteer" awards after being at the forefront of a campaign to change the law to make sure safety valves are fitted in all new homes to prevent scald injuries.
He has now been presented with his 5,000 prize charity donation at Edinburgh Airport by Lord Provost George Grubb.
Mr Stevenson said: "We have been fundraising to run a family therapeutic weekend this December. This money will ensure that event can go ahead.
"Working with such wonderful children who have been affected by burns or scalds has really changed the way I look at life and inspires me every day."
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, added: "All of us at the airport are so proud of Mark."
