Council hit by e-mail scam

CITY council staff have been targeted by bogus tax e-mails.

The e-mails, claiming to be from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, ask for staff to contact them about tax refunds.

In an internal e-mail, the council warned staff to be on their guard and said: "We mentioned this a few weeks ago, but there are still e-mails being sent to staff stating that they come directly from HMRC and offer tax refunds.

"These e-mails look genuine, but are 'bogus' – you would not be notified about tax refunds by HMRC via e-mail. Please delete these e-mails, that come from a variety of addresses, and do not follow the links."
