THE mother of Celtic captain Scott Brown was reportedly punched by a fan after her son was sent off during the side’s Champions League tie with Barcelona on Tuesday.

Heather Fotheringham, 51, was allegedly punched in the back by a fan after standing up following Brown’s controversial red card.

The Sun report that Heather and husband Brian told the assailant to wait to see the replay of the incident, at which point Heather was attacked.

Brown’s mother was taken to a suite at Parkhead to recuperate where she recovered.

Celtic said last night that an investigation is under way.

Brown, the Celtic captain, was sent off for kicking out at Brazilian star Neymar. The 28-year-old midfielder has since apologised for his actions.

Celtic went on to lose the game 1-0 to leave them pointless two games into the Champions League group stage.
