Scots publisher wins trade prize

SCOTTISH publisher Canongate has been named the best in the industry after Barack Obama's best-selling books saw it double its turnover in a year.

Canongate, which boss Jamie Byng turned around after he bought the struggling firm in 1994, won the UK Publisher of the Year title at the British Book Awards yesterday.

Mr Byng acquired the UK & Commonwealth rights to Mr Obama's books Dreams from My Father and Audacity of Hope in early 2007.

The books reached number one when Mr Obama was elected in November 2008 and Canongate shipped well over half a million copies.

Success also came in 2008 with The Mighty Book of Boosh, drawn from the popular comedy series, and the acclaimed novel The Spare Room by Helen Garner.
