Scots dementia figures rise
THE NUMBER of people living with dementia in Scotland is 10,000 higher than previously estimated, figures suggest.
Alzheimer Scotland yesterday revealed its updated statistics, amending the previous figure of 72,500 to 82,500 people with dementia in Scotland.
The charity said the figure will double within 25 years.
They said that the majority of the increase could be attributed to a more accurate measuring of dementia among the oldest people - those aged 90 and up - particularly women.
Henry Simmons, chief executive of Alzheimer Scotland, said: "We have an immense challenge if we are to continue to tackle the key issues of dementia support and care across Scotland.
"This will require greater and more consistent investment so that people with a diagnosis and their families are empowered to make important decisions."
