Scots bask in sun as mercury hits 25°C
SCOTS made the most of glorious sunshine yesterday as soaring temperatures were expected to make it the hottest weekend of the year so far.
By early afternoon, the mercury had risen to 25C in some parts of the country, with most areas enjoying clear blue skies and high temperatures.
Today should be similar, although a touch cooler, especially along the North Sea coastline, but temperatures will still be well above average for the time of year.
Yesterday, Scots were making the most of the weather, with country parks and beaches packed.
Mark Kelly, manager at Gourock outdoor pool in Inverclyde, said: "We opened at 10am this morning and they had been queuing to get in from early on.
"The weather is terrific and hundreds of people are out enjoying themselves."
Tesco has reported a 364 per cent jump in sales of barbecues, a 40 per cent rise in sales of after-sun cream and predict they will sell some 1.2 million burgers across the UK this weekend.
The hot weather will continue today, and marathon organisers in Edinburgh are warning competitors to wear plenty of sunscreen.
Around 17,000 runners are expected to take part in the Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon.
A Met Office spokesman said: "Friday has been the hottest day of the year so far.
"Today should be similar or a touch cooler, especially along the North Sea coastline, but temperatures will still be well above average.
"The weather should cool down this week, with cooler air coming down from the north, but it will still be fine and dry."
