Scots disagree with UK over ‘most beautiful beach’

The Isle of Skye’s beaches have been voted as ‘Scotland’s most beautiful’ in a poll of the UK public, but Scots prefer Ayrshire and Arran

42 per cent of respondents however, said they didn’t know where to find the most beautiful beaches in Scotland - the new research from Sykes Cottages says.

The Isle of Skye- famous for its cliffs, lochs and distinctive rock pinnacles - took the Scottish destination top spot in the UK poll with 12 per cent of the vote, followed by Orkney Islands (9 per cent) and the Shetland Islands (7 per cent).

However, Scottish respondents disagreed with the rest of the UK, voting the 80 miles of unspoilt coastline in Ayrshire and Arran as the most beautiful, with 21 per cent of the vote.

According to Scottish respondents, the second best beaches in the country can be found in the Outer Hebrides (12 per cent), with the Isle of Skye coming in third position with 10 per cent of the vote.

Outside of Scotland, Cornwall was voted as having the most beautiful beaches in Britain overall, while Pembrokeshire - home to Britain’s only coastal national park - took the top spot in the Wales vote and

second spot in the overall vote.

Overall, 92 per cent of those polled said they were planning on making a trip to a UK beach this summer, with 34 per cent of these looking to take an extended break.

Tom Lowes of Sykes Cottages said: “It’s clear from the results that UK residents living outside of Scotland need to get exploring.

“We were surprised to see how many respondents didn’t know where to find the most beautiful beaches in Scotland and recommend all these people pack their suitcases immediately

Ayrshire and Arran: 21 per cent

Outer Hebrides: 12 per cent

Isle of Skye: 10 per cent

Orkney Islands: 10 per cent

North Highlands: 9 per cent

Shetland Islands: 8 per cent

Scottish Borders: 7 per cent

Dumfries and Galloway: 7 per cent

Argyll and the Islands: 7 per cent

Moray: 5 per cent
