Scotland and Ireland to confer over eagle poisonings

SCOTLAND'S environment minister is planning to meet her counterpart in Ireland to address how to tackle poisoning of birds of prey in the two countries.

The decision to meet up comes after it was revealed that six golden eagles had died and many more were unaccounted for in an Irish reintroduction programme that uses birds donated from Scotland.

Three of the dead birds, among 53 Scottish golden eagles given to Ireland since 2001, are believed to have been illegally poisoned.

Roseanna Cunningham, environment minister, has written to John Gormley in the Irish government, to suggest a meeting with a view to collaborating on initiatives to tackle wildlife crime.

Ms Cunningham said: "Sadly, poisoning is still being reported, but both governments find this behaviour unacceptable."

Irish environment minister John Gormley said: "We are very grateful to the Scottish Government and people for their support in allowing eaglets to be taken for our project."
