Team looks to get on a roll in fundraiser

ROLLER derby team the Auld Reekie Rollers are hoping to raise the profile of their sport with a fundraising event at Meadowbank.

The sport sees two five-member teams don gum shields and kneepads to battle it out on the track, scoring points for passing other players and attempting to block the opposition, with players adopting skating names and alter-egos.

The event on January 24, called the Fishnet Burns Night, will feature two teams of Auld Reekie players and visitors from the London Roller Girls.

Spokeswoman Kirsty Greer said: "It's great fun for families to watch, it's quite theatrical, it's fast, it's violent – it's amazing."

The game starts at 2pm, tickets are 7 on the door.
