TAYSIDE Police today launched a virtual police museum to commemorate the end of an era in local policing in the area.

Tayside will cease to exist as a regional force on 1 April with the creation of the new Police Scotland, and to celebrate its history the force has set up a dedicated Facebook page, highlighting some of the key events since the force was founded in May, 1975.

They include policing T in the Park over the years and the G8 summit of world leaders at the Gleneagles Hotel in 2005, and details of significant murders and other crimes investigated by Tayside Police.

Sarah Craig, the Digital Media and Communications Manager at Tayside Police explained: “Tayside Police’s museum recently moved from force headquarters in Dundee to new premises in Kirriemuir. During that move we remembered the thousands of visitors who had enjoyed a tour of the museum over the years and thought we could bring the museum to life by sharing some of the policing stories and photographs in a virtual space.

“We already enjoy a 32,000 following on Facebook and our presence on that platform has proved to be extremely successful so we thought it would be the perfect place to bring to life the history of Tayside Police using the timeline feature to tell the story of policing in the area through photographs, videos, and articles.”

She added:”From 1 April Tayside Police will no longer exist as all forces in Scotland join to become the Police Scotland. As such, this Facebook page will become a virtual time capsule that will help keep Tayside policing memories alive for future generations.

“The plan is for the page to always evolve and over the next few months we are encouraging both serving and retired Tayside Police officers and police staff to get in touch with their own stories and photographs of policing in the area since 1975 so that we can add their accounts to the timeline.”
