Prison chiefs rethink after halal scare

SCOTTISH prison chiefs will review their contract with supplier 3663 after halal food with traces of pork DNA was distributed to jails in England and Wales.

The Scottish Prison Service does receives food from 3663, but not the contaminated line.

“The SPS can confirm that the products in question have not been supplied to us,” a spokeswoman said.

However, it is concerned by the incident and will make a decision after seeing the outcome of a Food Standards Agency investigation, The Scotsman understands.

Food distributor 3663 identified McColgan Quality Foods Limited, a Northern Ireland-based company, as the source of “the very small number of Halal savoury beef pastry products” found to contain pork DNA which it supplied to prisons in England and Wales.

In a statement, 3663 said all halal products from the manufacturer had been withdrawn.

Islamic law forbids the consumption of pork.
