Edinburgh’s Got Talent: Stephanie shines brightly in her bid for stardom

AN administration officer for the Scottish Volleyball Association has told how she hopes appearing at this week’s Edinburgh’s Got Talent live final will catapult her to stardom.

Stephanie Ternent, 23, from Dumbiedykes, won her spot at the Playhouse event on Friday after securing 1720 votes.

The singer, who worked for The Royal Bank of Scotland for nearly five years after leaving school at the age of 16, said: “I would like to be a star – that’s the truth.

“Singing is what I’ve always wanted to do and I would really love now to take the steps to do something professional.

“I used to dance a lot but stopped when I was 13, which I regret, but it’s my singing I’m 100 per cent focused on now.”

After performing Amy Macdonald’s Run for the clip which took her to the final, Stephanie said she is choosing between that track, Macdonald’s Mr Rock and Roll and Alexandra Burke’s version of Hallelujah ahead of the Playhouse show.

“I’m still deciding between a ballad and a more up-beat dance number,” she said. “One of the things I like about ballads is that you can draw the audience in through emotion. But then, with the more up-beat stuff, you can really get the audience dancing and bopping away.

“I love Amy Macdonald. Alexandra Burke is more poppy but she does the big ballads as well, and I’m pretty comfortable with that.

“I’m just going to stick to the original backing track but will definitely bring my own take on it with the singing. At the moment I’m just practising and practising, and trying to decide which track I want to perform.”

Stephanie said her moment in the limelight has been a long time coming.

“I started singing when I was really young, when I was about three or four, doing shows for the family, that sort of stuff. Then I was in dancing groups.

“I made a CD of cover songs with a friend of the family when I was 16, another when I was 19 and then another last year. They just get dished out to my friends and family – but it’s great to see how much I’ve grown up in the way I sing. My voice has got a lot deeper and stronger since the first CD I made.”

Stephanie said she still feels anxious about performing in the final.

“I am quite a nervous person. I haven’t had any professional singing lessons. I’m not technically very musical. When I get on stage, that’s the challenge for me – how to overcome that nervousness.”

Stephanie added that the support of friends and family has been key to her success.

“They’ve been so supportive,” she said. “It’s been a long process to get this far but they’ve really got behind me.”
