PLANS to close Haddington Sheriff Court have been branded an attack on the delivery of local justice.
The Scottish Court Service (SCS) is currently consulting on proposals to shut 11 courts across the country as part of an overhaul aimed at saving more than £1.4 million a year.
But East Lothian Labour MSP Iain Gray has called on SCS to go back to the drawing board and look again at its proposals for Haddington.
In his official response to the SCS consultation, he argued the closure plans would reduce access to justice, disrupt good working relationships across public services, harm the local economy and impact on police time.
More than 1200 people have signed campaign postcards and coupons opposing the closure.
Mr Gray said: “I just hope the Scottish Court Service will take on board the strength of feeling in East Lothian and reconsider its plans.”
