Businessman
court delay

The boss of a recycling firm has been ordered to meet social workers before being sentenced for environmental offences.

Gary Doonin, 46, appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court to be punished for keeping controlled waste at the former Woodend Colliery, in Armadale, in a manner likely to cause pollution.

However, defence lawyer John Hamilton, QC, told the court a background report ordered by the sheriff had not been prepared. He said Doonin, from Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, was not to blame and had an appointment with social workers on Monday.

A jury earlier convicted Doonin and his company, Doonin Plant, of four charges under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Sheriff Douglas Kinloch yesterday deferred sentence until December 13.
