Science centre job losses halved

STAFF at the troubled Glasgow Science Centre won a reprieve last night after management agreed to halve the number of planned redundancies.

After suffering heavy financial losses and poor visitor numbers, the centre’s administrators had feared that more than 30 jobs would go, but with a restructuring of hours and conditions that number has dropped to 15 from a full complement of 120.

A spokeswoman for the 75 million visitor attraction said: "It looks like we will have far fewer redundancies than we had thought initially which is great news. We are hoping that as the Glasgow Tower comes back on stream and the business develops then we will look at the situation again."

The centre has been beset by problems since it was opened last year.

Despite the problems, the management revealed that more than 58,000 school children have visited the futuristic attraction to enjoy highlights such as the planetarium which has wowed audiences.

The centre complex has also been voted Scotland’s best family attraction by the Good Britain Guide.

Engineers this week removed a damaged ball bearing which was allowing the Glasgow Tower to sink.
