Gigha lands windfall with communal turbines
SCOTLAND’S first mains-connected community owned windfarm will be switched on today in another landmark development for islanders on Gigha.
Three 100ft-high turbines will power the island’s homes and help them become more energy efficient.
Profits from the sale of electricity to the national grid will be used to rebuild houses, which were below a tolerable standard, with energy savings making them cheaper to heat.
It is expected that power generated by the 400,000 windfarm will initially raise 75,000 a year for the community, rising to 135,000.
As well as funding island projects, the money will be used to pay off debts, making it self-sustaining within eight years.
