Schools cited as SNP's weak link
THE education ministry has been branded the weakest link in the Scottish Government after it emerged its ministers had lost more votes than any of their colleagues this year.
An analysis by the Conservatives of the 56 votes at Holyrood throughout 2008 showed that the SNP lost seven education votes and won only three.
Close behind were the health ministers with five losses, and then the finance and justice ministries with just three each. The environment ministers, led by Richard Lochhead and Mike Russell, had a perfect record with no defeats.
Throughout the past year, question marks have been raised over the performance of the education team, led by education secretary Fiona Hyslop, particularly over a drop in the number of teachers, failures over reducing class sizes, unhappiness about university funding and rows with councils over providing universal free school meals.
