Savings failure

You report some remarkable sleight of tongue by Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary (24 April).

Yes, renewables subsidies put up energy bills (I think the first time he has actually admitted this publicly) but no, somehow “we are reducing peoples’ bills overall”. Like most consumers, I can’t say I have noticed this reduction.

Previous claims of “savings” due to government energy policy have lumped together the real, if potential, savings from sensible policies, such as support for home insulation, with subsidies for renewables and reported a small net reduction on what the government claim would otherwise have been larger increases.

However, if energy saving measures had been more actively promoted and better implemented, then consumers would indeed have seen real reductions.
