A SAUNA boss in the Capital has been charged with running a brothel.

Ivan Cameron, owner of the Newtown Sauna in Edinburgh, confirmed he had been charged with living off immoral earnings.

The move follows a series of raids on saunas across the city on June 7. Seven premises – including the Newtown Sauna in Hart Street, Leith – were targeted by police.

Last week, the force failed in a bid to have the Newtown’s licence revoked after councillors said police had not proved it was a major risk to public health.

But Mr Cameron, 68, yesterday confirmed: “I was charged by the police this week. I’ve been charged with running a brothel and living off immoral earnings.”

He declined to comment further but a friend said Mr Cameron denied the charges and would vigorously defend himself against them.

The Newtown Sauna was allowed to reopen last week after members of the licensing committee of Edinburgh City Council rejected the police bid to revoke their public entertainment licence.
