Saltire plates 'to be legalised'

MOTORISTS may be able to legally display the Saltire on their number plates next year under a plan drawn up by the UK government, it was revealed yesterday. At present, drivers could face a fine.

A spokeswoman at the department for transport said legislation is likely to be put to parliament in the new year in a move to enshrine the right to fly national flags.

Jim Murphy, the Scottish Secretary, said the move was "great news for Scottish motorists".
