THE Russian navy has confirmed that its ships leaked oil off the coast of Ireland.

Captain Igor Dygalo, a navy spokesman, said the ships spilled 20 to 30 tonnes of oil into the Celtic Sea. The Irish marine department had put the spill at about 500 tonnes.

Capt Dygalo said that the two countries had agreed the leak had not damaged fishing areas or the coast.
