One of the world’s most progressive mental asylums

Craighouse, which was bought by Napier University and refurbished in 1994, was once considered one of the world’s most progressive mental asylums.

Old Craig House, which dates from the 16th century, was bought in the late 19th century by the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and developed as Craig House Hospital.

The main building for paying patients was intentionally grand, resembling a country house or hotel rather than an institution, with the interior including a great hall and a billiard room.

Before being sold by the university, it housed, among other things, the School of Creative Industries and was home to around 1200 staff and students.
