Rush-hour drivers to use hard shoulder

TRANSPORT SECRETARY Stewart Stevenson has been urged to let rush-hour commuters use motorway hard shoulders.

Bosses at Transport Scotland are already planning to trial the scheme, known as hard-shoulder running, on part of the M77.

During the pilot project, buses will be allowed to use the hard shoulder during the morning rush hour on the northbound section of the motorway between junctions one and four.

A Transport Scotland spokeswoman said that after it had been evaluated, they "may then consider extending the concept to other priority users".

However, the Tories accused the Scottish Government agency of "watering the scheme down" by only allowing buses to take to the hard shoulder.

Tory transport spokesman Jackson Carlaw urged Mr Stevenson to introduce the scheme "for all vehicles on suitable sections of the M77, M8, A720, M74, M80 and other congested roads".

He said: "I'm sure the M77's long-suffering users will be pleased to hear the government plans to pilot the scheme."
