Rural patients to get webcam examinations
PLANS are in place to help patients in rural areas of the Lothians get access to specialist care from their own home.
The Scottish Government is set to launch the electronic system which would see consultants examine patients over a webcam.
Along with the camera to enable communication, the device will also be equipped with technology to read blood pressure and monitor glucose levels.
It would save the time of health workers who travel long distances to see patients, and mean frail people wouldn't have to negotiate journeys to city hospitals.
The Scottish Centre for Telehealth (SCT) will be run with the help of NHS 24, whose chief executive John Turner said: "Embracing new technology to improve patient access to health care, no matter where they live, is vital.
"NHS 24 and SCT are committed to leading the way in telehealth, to improving care and to providing a high quality service."
