Row over business rates
Business leaders have complained to finance secretary John Swinney that a recent increase in business rates is damaging firms.
The Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) yesterday called for a transitional relief scheme. The SNP administration rejected the proposals, which have also been made by opposition parties, arguing almost 60 per cent of ratepayers were better or no worse off.
But the SCC has highlighted "massive" increases, including one of 414 per cent. A government spokesman said: "Mr Swinney agreed officials would provide further explanation on revaluation.
"He also suggested the government would be willing to consider streamlining the appeals process."
But SCC chief executive Liz Cameron said: "Where a small or medium-sized business has to find tens of thousands of pounds extra, the result could mean job losses, and it may even threaten the business."
