Robert Crawford: It's vital to invest now to exploit 2014's chances
The issues surrounding the legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in your editorial (Glasgow's regeneration games need close attention) are highly relevant, given how much is at stake in terms of ensuring that a long-neglected area of Scotland is able to take advantage of what is a unique set of circumstances.
The awarding of the 2014 Games to Glasgow and the decision to complete the M74 were the catalyst that sparked the formation of Clyde Gateway in December 2007. The Scottish Government, along with the two of the biggest local authorities in Scotland and Scottish Enterprise, collectively recognised there would never be a better opportunity to deliver a physical, economic and social transformation, which would by its nature create a demand for new homes, industries and commerce.
Investors and developers are responding to the opportunities provided by Clyde Gateway.
The investment arm of Aviva, one of the UK's largest insurance groups, is staking 10 million in new offices that will bring 500 jobs to the East End of Glasgow – a development scheduled for completion in mid-2012.
A 35m business park is under construction near one of the major new junctions on the M74 and discussions for substantial private sector funding for this venture are at an advanced stage.
I agree with your point that in these times of austerity extra care must be taken to ensure that priority goes to those projects most likely to achieve success in attracting new business, investment and jobs. Clyde Gateway is increasingly demonstrating such success, and thus the decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash its support is disappointing and surprising.
Scottish Enterprise has said it recognises there is a need to invest now if the 2014 opportunities for the whole of Scotland are to be fully exploited. We at Clyde Gateway agree with this. Even at this late stage we would strongly urge Scottish Enterprise to reconsider its decision and ensure we don't endanger this vital legacy.
