Road death figures fall to all-time low

The number of people killed on Scotland's roads last year fell to the lowest level since records began, a new survey revealed today.

The Main Transport Trends 2010 survey also showed that the number of people seriously injured in road accidents in 2009 fell by more than 10 per cent to set a new record low.

A total of 216 people were killed on Scotland's roads last year - 54 less than in 2008.

The reduction meant there were 20 per cent fewer road deaths than in 2008 and 30 per cent less than in 1999.

The survey also found that commuters' habits remain unchanged.

Last year, 67 per cent of journeys to work were made by car, 16 per cent by public transport and 15 per cent by active travel, such as walking or cycling.

The bus was the most popular mode of public transport, used by 12 per cent of commuters.
