Rise in alcohol poisoning as incidents soar
THE number of people admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning has shot up in the Lothians over the last decade.
Figures released by the Scottish Government show that last year 934 were diagnosed with illness and sent to hospital to be treated.
This is compared to 682 ten years ago, an increase of more than half.
The statistics showed that almost a quarter of those admitted were under the age of 24.
Public Health Minister Shona Robison said: "These figures are another reminder of the grip alcohol misuse has on Scotland.
"Alcohol misuse costs the NHS 2.25 billion each year.
"Our proposals to tackle the problem are bold. They include raising the off-sales alcohol purchase age to 21."
