Richey denies beating up grandfather

FREED Death Row Scot Kenny Richey has denied being involved in an attack on a granddad.

The Evening News reported yesterday that a 63-year-old man in Polwarth had been assaulted. Today Edinburgh-born Mr Richey denied allegations by Ian McCall that he was the man who had burst into his flat, beaten him with a baton and trashed his flat.

Mr Richey, who arrived back in the Capital earlier this year after 21 years on Death Row, said he was not responsible for the attack.

He said: "The police have not been at my door. I am happy to speak to them but I will speak to them at my place. I have not touched anybody. I don't beat up old men and I

don't kill kids. Whatever happened I had nothing to do with it. He owes a lot of people money, a lot of people out there want him bad, but I'm not one of them."

He added that if police did try to arrest him, they would be met with some resistance.

Granddad-of-five McCall has wounds across his face and head after being attacked at his Polwarth home on Thursday evening.

He claimed that a man burst into his flat and knocked him to the ground before assaulting him.

Police swarmed to the area in a massive response to the incident and witnesses reported hearing the disturbance and seeing pools of blood in the tenement close.

Mr McCall reportedly said: "I was making a cup of tea at about half six when there was a knock on the door.

"When I opened it I saw this figure dressed all in black with his face covered.

"Before I could react a black baton came flying towards my head and I was knocked back onto the floor in my hall.

"I'm lucky I'm still here at my age. I managed to get out into the street and he ran off as I stumbled into my local pub."

A police spokesman said enquires were ongoing into an incident on Thursday where a 63-year-old was assaulted.
