Review: James Acaster: Amongst Other Things, Pleasance, Courtyard
James Acaster: Amongst Other Things, Pleasance, Courtyard *****
EFFORTLESS has been used in pretty much every review, comment and conversation about James Acaster's comedy.
For few other words better sum up Acaster's laid-back, confident, curious ruminations on life's more beautiful details.
Exquisite might be a good word to throw in with effortless. Each little observation, whether it be on dried fruit, doughnut faces or the glee of spotting the sea from the car window, is dissected and contemplated with unique insight that searches for the most wonderfully funny experience worth sharing.
It's a mixed style of story-telling and philosophising that hasn't been perfected so well since possibly Daniel Kitson.
Acaster's brave, too, slowing down set-pieces and stories to excruciating levels that would turn tedious in lesser hands, but are simmered perfectly to let each little flavour of an idea delight the tastebuds.
