Restaurant Review: La P’tite Folie, 61 Frederick Street and 9 Randolph Place

THERE is certainly no shortage of French eateries in Edinburgh.

But if you haven’t yet sampled the delights of La P’titie Folie, perhaps now is the time to do so.

In translation, The Little Madness can be enjoyed at two locations – Frederick Street and Randolph Place – both offering traditional French cuisine at fair prices.

The venues do not vary too greatly from one another in terms of what is on offer, yet Frederick Street is perhaps the most “French”, owing to its quirky Parisian chic decor, incorporating film posters and deep red walls to create a warm, cosy atmosphere.

Open for lunch (12pm to 3pm, with two courses priced at £9.95) and dinner (6pm to 11pm) the restaurants have a wide offering to ponder over.

From the a la carte menu they should expect the likes of steamed mussels in garlic and white wine cream (£5.95); ham-hock croquette with caramelized apples and Arran mustard dressing (£5.50); pan-fried sirloin steak with blue cheese sauce (£18.95); and roast rack of Highland venison with celeriac purée and curly kale (£17.95).

There is, as perhaps expected, an extensive range of wines and the desserts will likely tempt even the most full of stomachs (white chocolate crème brûlée, £4.95, anyone?).

Under the ownership of Virginie Brouard, La P’titie Folie has more than built a reputation for quality and strong customer service.

This was strengthened when she opened her Randolph Place branch in 2003, which is now complemented by her Le Di-Vin wine bar next door.

Brush up on your French and pay all three venues a visit – it will be worth it.
