Residents warned of big day shutdown

RESIDENTS and businesses in the Canongate area received a letter from the City of Edinburgh Council warning them how the Royal Wedding would affect them.

At various times from 4am to 6pm tomorrow, 16 roads will be completely or partly closed, with 20 suffering parking restrictions.

The letter, from Euan Kennedy, road services manager, revealed the council planned "to erect barriers for the purpose of creating a secure route for the movement of wedding guests".

And it is not just drivers who face disruption.

Mr Kennedy wrote: "Given the narrow geometry of the Canongate and the need to maintain the level of security required and general public safety, certain areas will be restricted in terms of pedestrian movement."

Residents were warned they could expect an early wake up.

"To allow the City of Edinburgh Council to safely erect the infrastructure, and to minimise traffic disruption, a substantial amount of work will be undertaken early on the morning of Saturday, 30 July," Mr Kennedy wrote.

"There will inevitably be some unavoidable noise from vehicles and the setting up of barriers for which I apologise."
