Rescuers save fifth animal in last six weeks

FIVE firefighters were dispatched to rescue a dog that had become trapped in a cave in Dunbar on Friday afternoon.

The dog crept into the cave, near Dunbar beach, at around 3pm and fire crews used a short extension ladder to retrieve the animal.

It's the fifth time Lothian and Borders fire crews have been called to rescue a trapped animal in the last six weeks.

Rush-hour commuters faced lengthy delays after a horse became trapped in its transporter box on the City Bypass on June 25. Less than two weeks earlier, crews were called to rescue another dog that had become trapped down a badger sett and a cow trapped on a wire fence.

That same week, fire crews also hit the national headlines for their innovative rescue of a newborn kitten from a kitchen pipe using a household vacuum cleaner and a sock.

Local fire crews normally attend between 15 and 20 such incidents in a year.
