Remote port's regeneration

ONCE a thriving herring port, Wick has suffered from lack of investment in recent years, which may have contributed to its lower house prices.

Unemployment, at 2.9 per cent, is higher than the Scottish average.

Its population of 8,500, although rising, is also ageing, with the number of people aged 44 or under falling by 9.2 per cent and those aged 45 or over rising by 16.4 per cent.

The town is considered remote, being more than 100 miles from Inverness, the nearest city. However, regeneration plans include a marina and harbour project.
