'Remarkable condition' of spear found in a burn

A BRONZE Age spearhead dating from about 3,500 years ago that was found wedged in a rock crevice in a burn at Mennock Water in Dumfries-shire is now on display in Dumfries Museum.

"It is in a remarkable condition," the Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer said in his annual report, published yesterday. The office claims objects for the Crown under the law of treasure trove.

The report also details finds including a late Bronze Age sword found near Lockerbie and a fragment of a Roman soldier's tombstone found in a field near Carberry, East Lothian.

The report also discloses that any "suspicious" cases will be investigated, after a case involving the discovery of Roman pottery and glass.
