'Refugee' award for our reporter
THE SCOTSMAN reporter Shân Ross has been awarded a prize in a competition established to "recognise fair and outstanding reporting on asylum issues" in Scotland.
Her story about Eugene Kavira – a 17-year-old Congo refugee now living in Glasgow, who traced his twin brother and another younger brother to a holding camp in Kinshasa – was runner-up in the Refugee Week Scottish Media Awards 2008.
The competition, run by Oxfam's Asylum Positive Images Network, attracted more than 40 nominations in the broadcast, national print, local print and photography categories. The judging panel was made up of refugee journalists and refugee community leaders.
The story was nominated for an award by the British Red Cross, which runs a tracing and messaging service for those separated by conflict.
