Reform poll is 'disrespectful'

HOLDING a referendum on voting reform on the same day as next year's Holyrood election would be an "extraordinary act of disrespect" by Westminster, a Scottish Government minister has said.

External Affairs Minister Fiona Hyslop hit out after it was reported the vote on introducing the alternative voting system was to be held on 5 May 5, the same day as the next Scottish Parliament elections.

A UK Government source said the date of the referendum was likely to be announced next week. But Ms Hyslop said: "It would be an extraordinary act of disrespect for a referendum on a voting system which none of the mainstream parties in the UK actually support to be held on the same day as the Scottish elections."
