Red squirrels beating virus
AN ESTATE which last year saw its red squirrel population almost wiped out by a deadly virus is reporting that sightings have increased "significantly".
More than 100 red squirrels died at the Queensberry Estate, near Dumfries, when the squirrelpox virus, carried by grey squirrels blighted the population.
Andy Wiseman, spokesman for the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST), said: "The progress we have made shows targeted and efficient grey squirrel control really does work. But we must not drop our guard,It is essential that we maintain our efforts to prevent squirrelpox taking hold in south Scotland."
