Recovery in North Sea fish stocks cheers fishermen

THE North Sea, where Scottish fishermen have championed the use of pioneering conservation measures, is leading the rest of Europe in the recovery of threatened fish stocks, it was revealed yesterday.

The number of stocks considered to be below safe biological limits has declined from eight to six in the past year, according to a report published by the European Fisheries Commission. There are now five stocks which are being fished sustainably, compared with two a year ago.

Bertie Armstrong, the chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, said: "For the first time in recent times, the commission has recognised that progress is being made in sustainability in the North Sea, and that is very encouraging."

But he warned that Scottish fishermen were finding it increasingly difficult to reconcile their experience on the fishing grounds – where there is a relative abundance of fish – with the current controls on fishing opportunity.
