Rebus creator to turn literary classic into film
CRIME writer Ian Rankin has admitted he faces a tough challenge turning a dark literary classic into a film.
The Rebus creator is working on a screenplay of James Hogg's 19th century book, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner.
The 1824 text is regarded as one of the most influential Scottish works in existence and has inspired writers from Robert Louis Stevenson and Muriel Spark to Rankin himself.
The top-selling author said: "It's a tough book to turn into a film but it's also one of the first serial killer thrillers and that's the way I'm approaching it."
The writer made his comments as he revisited his old university yesterday to open the first phase of a new 60 million redevelopment.
The writer took a walk down memory lane as he attended a celebratory event to mark the makeover of the University of Edinburgh's main library.
