Reality Claus

In reply to Kathleen Manning (Letters, 18 November), Christmas has been cheapened by commerce – who can believe in Santa Claus when we are presented with hundreds of them?

I myself recall the same childhood simplicity. Our chimney was cleaned and on Christmas Day we wakened to happy surprises. One year I saw a wooden horse, but being a sceptical little brat, I asked how it had got down our narrow chimney.

Mother explained that my real father, who cared for us, his children, was our Father Christmas.

Thank God for Jesus and His church. Of course, He was not born in December snows, but in His honour we learn to enjoy ourselves and, hopefully, like Dickens's repentant Mr Scrooge, cast largesse to others.
