RCN warns of pressure on school nurses
SCHOOL nurses are feeling over-stretched with the burden of looking after too many children, according to a nurses' union.
The Edinburgh-based Royal College of Nursing said that school nurses were being handed additional responsibilities – such as administering HPV vaccines – and had to oversee the wellbeing of thousands of children.
Following a survey by the organisation, it was also found that nearly three-quarters spent a "significant" amount of time dealing with child protection issues.
As a result, the RCN Scotland has set out a four-stage plan to address the issue and ease the burden on community nurses.
Director Theresa Fyffe said: "The role of nurses working in schools is becoming ever more important, which is why we have developed a new way forward for community nursing.
"There is no doubt that many community nurses feel demoralised and under-resourced."
