A POPULAR homeless man whose plight caused a wave of public concern is still recovering in hospital two weeks after he fell ill.

Arthur Williams, affectionately known as Rastatramp, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary amid concerns over his health on May 14.

His disappearance from his regular spot on Leith Walk led to thousands of people flocking to social networking sites to wish him a speedy recovery.

Bunches of flowers were placed next to his cardboard home as rumours circulated he had died.

The overwhelming reaction caused police to put up signs informing the public he was still alive.

More than 9000 people have “liked” a Facebook page which was created in his honour.

Its messages include one from relative Georgette Marie-paule Maynard, who wrote: “Get well uncle Arthur God Bless you miss you. My auntie Jane and Uncle John always wanted you to come home but you choose to be this way.

“Take care and love you xxx your niece georgette.”
