Rare photos of film icon head to city

RARE photographs of Marilyn Monroe are to go on display in the city next month in the only Scottish showing of a world tour.

The collection of pictures, some of which had never been seen in public before this exhibition, are signed works by leading photographers of the era.

The Timeless Beauty exhibition features portraits, mainly in black and white, of the Hollywood icon in a variety of poses and moods.

Images of the screen heroine by George Barris, Bert Stern, Tom Kelley, Milton Green and Lazlo Willinger will all be on display, but the photo expected to generate most interest is by a Japanese Pan Am airline steward.

Kashio Aoki took pictures of Monroe with her new husband Joe DiMaggio as the pair landed in Japan on honeymoon in February 1954. Two weeks later as the couple were leaving the air steward presented them with the developed photos, which Monroe signed.

Edinburgh is the last stop for the collection before it is returned to the Monroe estate in Los Angeles.

The exhibition can be seen at The Dome in George Street from July 21 to 26.
