Ramblers group resist calls for a camping ban at loch
A LEADING outdoors group will oppose a proposed camping ban aimed at stopping antisocial behaviour along the shores of Loch Lomond.
Ramblers Scotland argues that the ban may force the problems into other areas and that police already have adequate powers to tackle the problems.
The group initially considered supporting the proposal but has formally registered its opposition in response to a consultation on the bylaw, held by Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority.
The authority wants to ban informal camping in a zone on the east shore stretching from Drymen to Rowerdennan.
Research by the authority showed "unacceptable" damage from 500 vehicles or tents in areas with no camping facilities during a month in the summer.
In the response, Helen Todd of Ramblers Scotland said yesterday that the ban could undermine the Land Reform Act and suggested alcohol and excessive noise be restricted instead.
"We feel it is not appropriate to target all campers through bylaws which would also affect any responsible camping taking place in this area, including on the West Highland Way.
"We also have major concerns that landowners in other areas where camping is perceived to be a problem would push for bylaws elsewhere, citing the example of Loch Lomond."
Tory MSP Murdo Fraser has indeed called for similar restrictions at loch-sides in Highland Perthshire.
The ramblers group, which has about 7,000 members, said better management of a site at Sallochy within the zone could ease the burden elsewhere.
It said: "Ramblers Scotland believe that other powers are available to deal with this behaviour, such as laws on litter, fires, noise, etc, and we are concerned that responsible campers will also be targeted along with those who act irresponsibly."
