Rail signallers announce new 48-hour strike
COMMUTERS are bracing themselves for more transport misery after the rail signallers' union called for a new wave of strikes.
The Rail Maritime and Transport Union is to stage a further two 48-hour walkouts and the first - starting on Friday at noon - will cause serious problems for Hibs fans travelling to Glasgow for Sunday's CIS Cup Final.
Supporters' club officials say that fans were relying on travelling by train and would now have no chance of a place on fully-booked supporters' buses.
Frank Dougan, treasurer of the Hibs Supporters Association, said: "The roads will probably be gridlocked and everyone will have to leave earlier."
Signal workers are also to walk out from noon on Monday, March 19 until noon on Wednesday, March 21. But the RMT's Scottish leader has agreed to meet with Network Rail bosses on Monday in a bid to thrash out a deal.
A first 48-hour wave of industrial action ended yesterday.
