Racism heads online list of hate crimes in Highlands
A TOTAL of 45 hate crimes have been reported in the Highlands since the launch of a new reporting system six months ago.
Racism and disability discrimination were the most common types of incidents logged through the website, with 37 per cent relating to racism and 20 per cent disability crimes.
Organisers of the Hate Free Highland system say the figures are a success, as they show more crimes are being reported.
The need for online reporting in the Highlands was identified through communication with under-represented communities across the region. The system offers a third-party reporting system for people who may feel uncomfortable about contacting the police directly.
Carolyn Wilson, chairwoman of Highland Council's resources committee, said: "Hate Free Highland is a welcome initiative that aims to support public agencies in the Highlands to respond to hate incidents."
She added: "Everyone has the right to live a life free from prejudice and discrimination, and Highland Council is committed to making this a reality for everyone in our community."
