As a feminist, I am concerned by the comparative lack of women in political life and can see strong arguments for a temporary use of quotas.
But there are also powerful arguments against quotas, and the last thing Scotland should be doing is imposing a legal requirement on all parties.
Parties are perfectly free to impose quotas on their own selection of candidates, if they wish. If the SNP, Labour and Greens think this is the right thing to do, then they should go right ahead.
If it proves to be a good idea, I have no doubt other parties and institutions will follow suit.
