Q and A: BSkyB takeover
Q. Why is Rupert Murdoch so keen to get complete control of BSkyB?
A. Many experts think the actual effect will be marginal, but it will give Murdoch the platform to start moving away from advertising-funded media to subscription-based media.
Q. If there is only a marginal effect, why do other news organisations object so vehemently?
A. The concern is that News Corp will corner the market. Many feel it will give Murdoch the platform to make subscription payments to online newspapers work.
Q. Is offloading Sky News a real concession?
A. On the face of it this is a concession because it will allow Sky News to remain independent. Critics point out Sky News is actually losing money.
