Pupils offer a language boost to Poles

PUPILS at a Lothians school are taking part in an innovative project to teach local Polish people to speak English.

Youngsters at St David's High School, Dalkeith, have joined forces with Newbattle Abbey College to develop an online language course for recent arrivals.

Using a Scottish Funding Council grant, the internet-based course will cater for the parents of the school's Polish pupils.

Those taking the course will initially be coached in the use of IT by senior pupils at the school, while the pupils will act as translators for their families and other members of the Polish community.

Project coordinator at Newbattle Abbey College, Rae McGhee, said: "With the growing number of Polish people coming to live and work in the community, this project is a great way to help them learn English and integrate into the community, while also allowing young people to develop their coaching skills."
